Our Story

How is Upbeat Music School different, and why does that matter?

At Upbeat Music School, music isn’t just about learning notes and rhythms—it’s about building confidence, making connections, and having fun. The joy of music comes from sharing it with others, and that belief is at the heart of everything we do. When I founded Upbeat, I wanted to create something beyond the typical music lesson—a place where musicians could meet like-minded people, form bands, and develop the skills they need to bring their music to life. Nothing would make me prouder than seeing a band that met through Upbeat playing gigs in Aberdeen one day.

My own journey with music started in primary school when I first picked up a guitar. Over the years, I have played in metal bands, cover bands, and musical theatre productions, all while developing a deep love for both performing and teaching. Studying Music Education at university and earning a first-class honours degree was an important step, but when I entered the classroom, I quickly realized that traditional music education wasn’t preparing young musicians for a lifelong love of music. The curriculum felt rigid, more about ticking boxes than inspiring creativity. I wanted to do things differently—to equip musicians with not just technical skills, but the confidence to share their music with the world.

That’s what makes Upbeat different. Lessons here aren’t just about memorizing songs; they’re about understanding what makes music work. I teach practical theory in a way that helps students break down their favourite songs, improvise their own solos, and create their own music. But more importantly, learning at Upbeat isn’t something you do in isolation—it’s something you experience as part of a musical community. Students don’t just practice alone; they apply what they’ve learned in real-world settings, whether that’s playing in a band, recording in a studio, or jamming with others.

Our Mission

To provide an engaging and inspiring environment where students learn, connect, and grow through music. We believe that music education should go beyond the lesson room, giving students real experiences that build confidence, creativity, and lasting friendships. Our goal is to nurture musicians of all ages, equipping them with the skills and passion to share their music with the world.

Our Core Values

  1. Community & Connection – Music is best when shared. We believe in fostering friendships, collaboration, and the joy of playing together.

  2. Confidence & Growth – Learning music should empower students to perform, create, and express themselves with confidence.

  3. Excellence Through Support – High expectations and strong mentorship help students achieve their full potential.

  4. Real-World Musicianship – We focus on practical skills that help students apply their learning in real musical settings, from jam sessions to live performances.

Everything we do at Upbeat is designed to help students grow through experience. Rock Band Week gives them the chance to play with a full live band, Studio Recording Week teaches them the importance of being prepared and process of laying down their own tracks, and Jam Sessions build their confidence in improvisation and collaboration. These experiences make learning more exciting and rewarding.

Right now, Upbeat is a one-man business, but the vision is much bigger. I want to bring in more tutors, expand to more instruments, and create a thriving community where students support and inspire one another. Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or looking to take your playing to the next level, I tailor each lesson to keep you challenged, engaged, and constantly improving.

If this sounds like the kind of music school you or your child would love to be a part of, the next step is simple—book a free, no-obligation trial lesson and see if Upbeat is the right fit. Let’s make music, build friendships, and create unforgettable experiences together.
